Code of conduct
How we treat
each other.
Short version: ask, and take no for an answer. Everyone here is trying to have a good night.
The rule everything else follows from
Consent
Anyone can say no
You can decline any dance, at any time, for any reason or none. “No thank you” is a complete sentence. Nobody is owed a dance, and nobody should be asked to explain a decline. If someone declines you, smile and move on.
You can stop mid-dance
If a dance becomes uncomfortable, painful, or just too fast, you can stop. “I need to sit this one out” is always enough.
Ask, don't assume
That covers dancing, teaching mid-song, and anything closer than a normal frame. Check first.
Sharing a floor
On the night
Lead and follow are roles
Not genders. Anyone can learn either, and anyone can dance either at any night we run.
Keep the floor safe
WCS is danced in a slot. Respect other people's slots, keep aerials and drops off the social floor, and adjust to your partner's level rather than expecting them to survive yours.
Mind the basics
Close quarters, warm rooms, long nights. Deodorant, a shirt change and breath mints are part of the etiquette.
Teaching is invited, not given
Unasked-for correction on the social floor lands badly, however well meant. Wait to be asked.
If something goes wrong
Tell us, and we will handle it
If someone makes you uncomfortable, find an organizer. At our nights that is Kelsey, or whoever took your cover at the door. You will be believed, it stays private, and you do not need to arrive with a solution in mind or be sure it was “bad enough”.
You can also reach us afterwards, and you can report something you saw happen to someone else.
This applies to nights we run. Other organizers on the calendar set their own policies, though most of the region works this way.
Now come dance.
That is the whole code. Tuesday at 7, beginner class first, nothing to book.
