If you have gone looking for swing dancing and come away confused, that is a reasonable place to end up. Several different dances answer to the name, they are historically related, and the people who do them use the word loosely. The two you are most likely to run into in Michigan are West Coast Swing and East Coast Swing.

The fastest way to tell

Watch where the follower travels. In West Coast Swing they move up and down a narrow lane, back and forth along one line. In East Coast Swing the couple turns around a shared centre, more like a small circle. That lane is called the slot, and it is the single most reliable tell. Once you have seen it you will never mistake the two again.

The second tell is the bounce. East Coast has one, a light lift through the feet that matches the fast music it is usually danced to. West Coast Swing stays level and grounded, and the energy goes into stretch between the partners rather than up and down.

They are danced to different music

This is where most people pick a side without meaning to. East Coast Swing lives with big band, rockabilly and early rock and roll, and it is fast. West Coast Swing is slower and much broader: blues, current pop, R and B, hip hop, country. If the song is on the radio right now, somebody is dancing West Coast Swing to it somewhere.

One is quicker to learn, the other takes longer to exhaust

East Coast Swing is genuinely easy to start. Most people can hold a basic and get around the floor after one lesson, which is why it turns up at weddings and in beginner ballroom classes.

West Coast Swing takes longer to get comfortable in, because it is improvised. Beyond the patterns, both people are making choices in the moment, and a good dance feels like a conversation rather than a routine. The trade is that it keeps giving you something to work on for years. People who have danced it for a decade are still finding new things in it.

So which should you start with?

If you want to dance at a wedding next month, learn East Coast Swing. If you want a dance that fits the music you already listen to and that you will still be interested in next year, start with West Coast.

You do not have to choose carefully. The skills carry across, and plenty of people do both. Lead and follow is lead and follow, and every hour on a floor makes the next one easier.
