in Grand Rapids

West Coast Swing in West Michigan is not hard to find once you know where it lives, but it does not advertise. Most nights are announced in a Facebook group, or not at all, which is why a search usually turns up a studio page from four years ago. Here is the actual state of things, and it is smaller and better than you would guess.

The honest size of it: two rooms, five miles apart

Grand Rapids does not have a West Coast Swing night on every corner. It has two studios that carry almost all of it, and they are both about five minutes from the city.

That is the whole local picture, and it is worth saying plainly rather than implying a bigger scene than exists. Two rooms is enough. The people in them dance several nights a week and most of them know each other.

The weekly night, and the one to start with

Tuesdays at Social Dance Studio is the entry point. A beginner class runs at 7 with an intermediate class alongside it, then the floor opens for social dancing. The class and the social being the same evening is what makes it easy: you learn something and then immediately use it with people who have been doing this for years and are pleased you came.

The monthly ones

The second Sunday of the month is an afternoon social, which is a different animal to a class night. The whole community turns up in one room, there is a free intro lesson at the start, and it is the best day of the month for meeting people who normally dance somewhere else. Fourth Friday is Swing 'n' Things, later and looser, better once you have a few weeks behind you.

Where people here actually drive

Michigan West Coast Swing dancers travel more than most scenes, and if you only count Grand Rapids you miss what the calendar is for. The regular drives from here, with the distances that matter:

The calendar carries all of it, ours and everybody else's, taken straight from what the organizers post rather than retyped by us. Filter it to West Michigan for the local picture, or widen it when you fancy a drive.

What it costs and what to bring

Weekly nights run about what a cinema ticket costs, and the monthly social includes the intro lesson. Nobody needs a partner: partners rotate in class and asking strangers to dance is the normal mechanism of a social. Wear something you can move in. Smooth soled shoes help and are not required on your first night.
