First time
Going on
your own.
Most of the people on that floor walked in alone the first time. It is the ordinary way to start, not the brave one.

The single most common reason people give for not trying a dance night is that they have nobody to go with. It is worth saying plainly: you do not need one, and turning up alone is so normal that nobody will register it.
Partner dancing does not mean bringing a partner
In a class, partners rotate. You will dance with most of the room over the hour, which is deliberate, because learning to lead or follow one specific person teaches you their habits rather than the dance. Couples who arrive together get split up too.
At the social afterwards, people ask each other to dance. Strangers ask strangers. That is the whole mechanism of the evening, and it only feels unusual for about twenty minutes.
What actually happens when you walk in
Somebody says hello and asks if it is your first time. You say yes. They tell you where to put your bag and introduce you to two people, and then the class starts and there is no more time to feel awkward about it. That is genuinely the whole thing.
The fear is that you will stand at the edge of the room all night. In practice the opposite problem is more common, and beginners often end up dancing more than the regulars, because experienced dancers make a point of asking new people.
You are allowed to say no
Anyone can decline any dance, at any point, without a reason. That is not a special allowance for beginners, it is how the floor works for everybody, and it is written into how we run our nights. You can sit out, watch, get a drink, and go home when you like.
The practical bits
Come to the class rather than only the social, at least the first time. It gives you a structure for the first hour and it hands you a room full of people you have already danced with. Get there five minutes early rather than exactly on time, because the five minutes before a class is when the introductions happen.
Wear whatever you would wear out, and something you do not mind moving in. Smooth soled shoes help but are not required on night one.
Where to do it
Our Tuesday night has a beginner class at 7 and is the easiest place in West Michigan to walk into on your own. Here is exactly how that evening runs, so nothing about it is a surprise.
If a different night suits you better, the calendar has all of them. Pick one that runs a class before the social and you will be fine.
Come and try it.
Tuesday at 7, beginner class first. No partner, no experience.
